Office of Research Newsletter Volume 1, Issue 1
The Office of Research has been bustling with activity. Consequently, we have a lot to share with you. Please take a few minutes to read through the highlights below -- and explore the links to additional information of interest. Also, keep your eye out for future editions of our newsletter. Finally, we wish you the best for a happy, productive 2014!
First Ever Faculty Dr. Anthony Berdis, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, has earned the distinction of having received Cleveland State University's first ever Faculty Innovation Fund (FIF) award for his proposal "Diagnostic Kits to Quantify Pro-Mutagenic Replication in Hyperproliferative Diseases."
The FIF award will support research by Dr. Berdis that will allow him to use his patented technology to develop a diagnostic kit that can be commercialized for use in hospitals and labs as a means to improve patient care during chemotherapy. In addition to a well-developed commercialization strategy, Dr. Berdis plans to use the FIF award to collect preliminary data needed to apply for external funding from the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, as well as for grants from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Department of Defense. The Selection Committee reviewing Dr. Berdis' proposal consisted of Distinguished Faculty, representatives from the Office of Research and the Technology Transfer Office, external members from JumpStart, the Ohio Third Frontier funded Wright Center for Sensor Systems Engineering, Case Western Reserve University, and the former Director of the NIH Center Review Committee. The Office of Research congratulates Dr. Berdis on his successful FIF proposal, and wishes his research team the best in their work on this exciting project.
NSF Awards $1.5 Million Grant to CSU Researchers
Dr. Dan Simon, Dr. Hanz Richter and Dr. Antonie van den Bogert of Cleveland State University's Washkewicz College of Engineering have been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation for a four-year project to develop a prosthetic leg that emulates able-bodied gait and utilizes a groundbreaking energy-regeneration system. This revolutionary new device promises to dramatically improve the quality of life for people with transfemoral (above-knee) amputations. With current prostheses, these amputees typically walk with a stiff-legged gait, which quickly can lead to other health issues. "Our prosthesis will allow amputees to walk with the same natural gait as an able-bodied person and reduce the adverse health effects caused by inadequate prostheses," said Dr. Simon, a professor in CSU's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "With our prosthesis, they'll be able to lead healthier and more active lives." The team will conduct research in the new Parker Hannifin Human Motion and Control Laboratory at CSU, a state-of-the-art facility with a V-Gait treadmill that uses motion sensors and 10 cameras to capture human movement.
Exciting News from the Technology Transfer Office CSU received its first royalty payment from LineStream Technologies. Based off intellectual property developed by Dr. Zhiqiang Gao, Department of Electrical Engineering, LineStream's pioneering embedded software for motor control accelerates the development of motor-based products, reducing time-to-market for semiconductor providers and OEMs. Within a relatively short time, LineStream has already sub-licensed the technology to Texas Instruments with plans to further expand licensing efforts with other companies. Furthermore, CSU has entered into several long-term sponsored research projects with leading multi-national corporations including Invacare Corp. and Parker Hannifin Corporation. Dr. Orhan Talu and Dr. Sridhar Ungarala are the principal investigators working with Invacare. Dr. Anton Van den Bogert and Dr. Jerzy Sawicki will be the principal investigators working on projects with Parker Hannifin. In addition, Dr. Taysir Nayfeh and Anita Wiederholt have entered into a research agreement funding by the International Copper Association to further develop their research on nano-composite copper wires. Together, these partnerships demonstrate CSU's commitment to working collaboratively with industrial partners in order to bring promising CSU innovations to market so that society can benefit from these technologies.
The Office of Research is pleased to announce the availability of funding to support undergraduate student research and scholarship for Summer 2014. The application deadline for the Undergraduate Summer Research Award is February 5, 2014. Beginning with the February 2014 review, the Office of Research has increased its matching funds for the Graduate Faculty Travel Award Program from no more than one-third to no more than two-thirds of the total cost of travel. Two recent examples demonstrate that Internal Funding Programs pay off! First, Dr. Peter Bubenik received a $279,430.00 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Dr. Bubenik credits two internal awards from the Office of Research at Cleveland State University as instrumental in helping him obtain his grant. Second, as mentioned above, Dr. Dan Simon is part of a research team that was recently awarded a $1.5 million NSF grant. According to Dr. Simon, "...it was the RTRF Program that provided the course release that gave me time to write the proposal. Basically, the Office of Research invested $10,000 in me, and it paid off with a $1,500,000 return."

"We want to shine a spotlight on the outstanding researchers at Cleveland State University who are making exciting advances in a wide variety of fields," explains Dr. Jerzy Sawicki, vice president for research at CSU.
Effective January 2, 2014, the Grants Accounting of the Controller's Office merged with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research (OSPR) in the Office of Research to form a new office named Sponsored Programs and Research Services (SPRS). Thomas Flannery (pictured left) was appointed Director of SPRS, effective December 16, 2013. Please join us in welcoming Thomas to Cleveland State University and to this important role.
The Office of Research has developed a number of new Student Research webpages - conveniently available from CSU's homepage, which include featured student researchers.
Please feel free to send us suggestions (with the option of remaining anonymous) for improving the Student Research webpages by clicking on "Submit Suggestion" on the Office of Research homepage. For example, if you know of other student journals, funding programs, or links related to student research that should appear on these pages, please let us know.
