Dr. Tushar Borkar, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded two grants totaling more than $2.5 million for research and development of additive manufacturing (AM) methods via America Makes through its Improvements in Manufacturing Productivity via Additive Capabilities and Techno-Economic Analysis (IMPACT) program.

The IMPACT program is focused on promoting and accelerating the development and deployment of innovative, cost-effective, energy-efficient additive manufacturing technologies to meet defense and/or commercial needs. Dr. Borkar’s grants will focus on the application of Directed Energy Deposition (a method for 3D printing of metals) to tooling used by the forging industry and will engage post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Best Poster Prizes Awarded for Undergraduate Summer Research Awards (USRA) Poster Session

More than 50 CSU students present their research at the Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) poster session on September 21. Based on faculty votes, prizes were awarded to the best posters in two categories: STEM fields and humanities/non-STEM field:

Sathish Kumar Funded by Department of Energy to Collaborate on AI Research Talent Development

Dr. Sathish Kumar, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science, has been awarded $600,000 by the Department of Energy under a collaborative grant to develop diverse talent to support the training of artificial intelligence (AI) researchers and developers.

The Mobilizing the Emerging Diverse AI Talent (MEDAL) project is a collaboration between University of Texas at San Antonio, the Florida International University, the Argonne National Laboratory, Bowie State University, Oakland University, Cleveland State University, and the University of Central Florida to train faculty, doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students on contemporary artificial intelligence research relevant to the Department of Energy.

U.S. Patent Application Publication

On October 3, 2023, the United States Patent and Trademark Office published U.S. Patent Application 2023/0310474 titled Coronavirus Treatment Composition and Method that names Dr. Xue-Long Sun, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and member of CSU’s Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD).

The invention includes a new pathway of coronavirus replication, a new mechanism to regulate coronavirus replication, a new drug target to regulate coronavirus replication, and new therapeutic approach for coronavirus infection, especially for COVID-9 caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus.

 

Patent Review Committee Decisions

The CSU Patent Review Committee approved two invention disclosures for patent protection. The disclosures were provided by Dr. Kailash Gulshan, an assistant professor in the Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science (BGES) and a member of GRHD.

The first invention disclosure, titled Novel role of PIP2 in regulating expression of cholesterol efflux pump ABCA1, relates to a novel approach of preventing atherosclerosis.  Dr. Gulshan’s second invention is titled TATP8b1 as a first known PIP2 flippase from any system and relates to a novel method for treatment of fibrosis and the prevention of adolescent liver disease.
