Professor Kiril A. Streletzky and associate professor Jessica Bickel from CSU’s Department of Physics have been awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to re-establish a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site at CSU.

The project, titled "Synthesis, Assembly and Characterization of Soft Matter Systems," has received $367,616 in funding to bring 30 students from across the US in the summers of 2024, 2025, and 2026 to CSU to work with faculty from Physics, Chemical, and Biomedical Engineering, and Math and Statistics on 10-week research projects. Dr. Fasong Yuan and MS Student Emilia DiBiasio Study Aquatic Health of Lake Erie aboard U.S. EPA's R/V Lake Guardian

Graduate student Emilia DiBiasio and Dr. Fasong Yuan, a professor in the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BGES), boarded the U.S. EPA's R/V Lake Guardian as visiting scientists representing Cleveland State University on the ship's spring 2023 sampling cruise on Lake Erie. As part of Dr. Yuan's Ohio Sea Grant-funded project, they collected sediment cores along a three station transect in central Lake Erie. Read More »

Meet Sebastian Sensale Rodriguez: Physics

Dr. Sebastian Sensale Rodriguez is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics. Before joining CSU, he was a postdoctoral scholar at Duke University, where he developed computational models to better understand the behavior of dynamic DNA origami structures at the nanoscale. He received his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Notre Dame, where his work focused on the development of analytical and computational methods for modeling biomolecules and electrokinetic processes for biosensing applications. Hilary Plum, an assistant professor in the Department of English and the Associate Director of the CSU Poetry Center, has published a new collection of poetry titled Excisions.

U.S. Patent Issuance

On November 22, 2022, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued U.S. Patent 11,504,741, titled Aligned Boron Nitride Nanatube (BNNT) Films, that names Dr. Geyou (Augyu) Ao, an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (CBE). The patent is directed to an untangling and alignment method developed for BNNTs directly applicable to create aligned arrays of BNNT. Applications can range from window tint treatments to cardiac ablation tips. Boron nitride nanotubes are superior to carbon nanotubes in terms of thermal and chemical stability and have unique optical properties.

NSF Seeks Input on Investment Roadmap for TIP Directorate

The U.S. National Science Foundation recently issued a Request for Information, or RFI, to gather insights for the development of an investment roadmap for its Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, or TIP, in accordance with the "CHIPS and Science Act" of 2022. The "CHIPS and Science Act" tasks the TIP directorate with developing a roadmap to guide investment decisions in use-inspired and translational research over a three-year time frame to advance U.S. competitiveness and develop the U.S. workforce in 10 critical technology areas and to address societal, national and geostrategic challenges in five areas. NSF seeks feedback on suitability and appropriate staging of specific technology areas for TIP investments as well as on related workforce needs.
