Dr. Peng Jiang, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences (BGES) and a member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD), has been awarded two new grants under a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) cooperative agreement that funds research in the fields of artificial intelligence, bioelectronics, and regenerative medicine to re-grow damaged muscle tissue. The $22 million cooperative agreement includes researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University, Rice University, University of Vermont, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Meet CSU’s Faculty: Tareq Khan, Mathematics and Statistics

Dr. Md Tareq Ferdous Khan is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. He earned his Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Big Data Track, from the Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine in the summer of 2023. Dr. Khan started his career as a researcher in his home country, Bangladesh, upon completion of his Master’s in Statistics and later worked full-time for more than eight years in three universities for different tenures. CSU Receives $741,362 from Ohio Department of Higher Education for Training Equipment under Super RAPIDS Program

CSU was awarded $741,362 under the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s (ODHE’s) Super RAPIDS program to invest in high-priority equipment purchases that support training in advanced manufacturing of chemical products, multiple allied health professions, and technical/trades workers & engineering technicians working with automated stage and film lighting systems. A reminder to faculty that proposals for these 2023-2024 internal funding programs are due February 1:

Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA)
Graduate Student Research Award (GSRA)
Faculty Research and Development (FRD)
Faculty Scholarship Initiative (FSI)

To assist in the preparation of successful applications, the forms that will be used to evaluate the proposals are included at the above web sites.

Additionally, the Graduate Faculty Research Support Program (GFRSP) is again open for applications.

The Office of Research Newsletter was launched in January 2014, and is excited to start a new decade of promoting the range and depth of research performed by CSU’s faculty, staff, and students.

U.S. Patent Issuance

On December 5, 2023, the United States Patent and Trademark Office allowed U.S. Patent 11,833,124 titled Compositions and Methods for Modulating HEXIM1 Expression that names Dr. Bin Su, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and a member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD), and Monica Montano, a professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

The patented technology provides a solution to a failed Phase II clinical trial investigating Hexamethylene bis-acetamide (HMBA) as a potent anti-cancer drug due to its high toxicity. The patented invention modulates HEXIM1 to reduce the HBNA high toxicity.

 

CTIA Wireless Foundation Launches Catalyst Competition

The CTIA Wireless Foundation launched its fifth annual Catalyst Competition. This year, more than $200,000 will go to emerging social entrepreneurs developing mobile-first solutions to enhance our lives and address challenges in American communities.

Up to six applicants will receive unrestricted grants, with a first-place award of $100,000. The top three winners will also receive a professionally produced video and opportunities to participate in speaking engagements and events for wireless industry leaders, elected officials, and policymakers.
