November 2024

72 Cleveland State undergraduate research students presented their work at the 2024 Undergraduate Summer Research Award Poster Session on September 19 in the Student Center Atrium. Students presented research that was funded by the Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) Program or as part of the McNair scholars program. Undergraduate research at CSU is conducted in collaboration with faculty mentors and often as part of a research team of undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral researchers.

Based on faculty votes, prizes were awarded to the best posters. This year’s winners were:

  • 1st Place (tie): Jacob Corbitt (advisor Phil Wanyerka) Archaeological Investigations at the Fort Hill Earthwork Complex 2024
  • 1st Place (tie) Marissa E. Serafine (Advisors Grace Huang and Vickie Coleman Gallagher) The Landscape of Newcomer Education in Northeast Ohio: Insights from Educators and Non-Profits

Students are welcome to exhibit their digital, multimedia, or multimodal works in a ‘poster session’ format, where presenters display their work on an electronic device and share with audience members about their process of creating it in a casual, conversational setting. Students creating websites, podcasts, videos, infographics, interactive data visualizations or maps, and any other digital or multimedia project should consider presenting their work in person at the Showcase.

Faculty are invited to please share the invitation with their students.

Patent Review Committee Update

Cleveland State’s Patent Review Committee has approved two invention disclosures. The first, by Dr. Prabaha Sikder (Mechanical Engineering), is titled A MULTIFUNCTIONAL PEEK CRANIAL IMPLANT. The novel cranial implant is composed of a proprietary bio-ceramic compound, when combined and processed, extruded filaments are 3D printed to produce biocompatible patient specific cranial implants to allow for improved healing of brain surgeries.

The second, by Dr. Geyou Ao (Chemical and Biomedical Engineering), is titled CHOLESTERIC LIQUID CRYSTAL SHELL WITH BORON NITRIDE NANOTUBES IN AN AQUEOUS CORE. The novel aqueous core can be used to improve the functionality of photonic devices, specialty paints and liquid crystal displays.

Water Monitoring Technology Commercialization

Dr. Chelsea Monty-Bromer (Chemical and Biomedical Engineering) is collaborating with the Cleveland Water Alliance (CWA) to continue the commercialization of technology invented by Dr Monty-Bromer for real time monitoring of water quality and detection of harmful algae blooms. The collaboration includes a pilot program in the CWA Lake Erie / Watershed Testbed for innovative technology deployments within natural environments.

Dr. Monty-Bromer’s novel and promising technology is patent pending and has received support from CSU’s TeCK Fund to take it from lab to market. In addition, the technology has been nominated to the short list of Innovative Technologies being considered to present at the upcoming CWA Tech Showcase at the Huntington Convention Center from March 25-March 26th, 2025.
