Dr. Brice Grunert, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences (BGES), will lead a new study to validate satellite data with “on-the-water” measurements in the Great Lakes. The four-year, $949,830 project is funded by NASA’s Office of Earth Science and is titled “Validation of PACE OCI science data products across diverse optical and trophic gradients of the Great Lakes.”

Dr. Grunert and co-investigator Audrey Ciochetto, a research associate at CSU, will validate satellite imagery from the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) on board NASA’s Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem (PACE) observatory, which launches later this year. Read More »

Ohio Department of Transportation Funding Will Improve Emission Monitoring Around Construction Sites

Dr. Mehdi Rahmati, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), alongside co-PIs Dr. Emmanuel Kidando and Dr. Josiah Owusu-Danquah, both assistant professors in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) have been awarded a one-year, $100,000 grant by the Ohio Department of Transportation. Their research will combine advanced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or drone) technology, cutting-edge machine learning, and intuitive visualization methods to improve monitoring of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions around construction sites. US Patent Application Filing

On March 15, 2024, U.S. Patent Application No. 18/606,352 titled Electrode for Monitoring Redox in Sentiment named Chelsea Monty-Bromer, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (ChBME), as first inventor. The invention covers a reliable approach to monitoring water quality in freshwater systems to help prevent illness and death for both humans and animals. One key focus of the vertically stacked zero resistance ammetry system will be phosphate monitoring.  Phosphorous is known to be a primary cause of algal blooms but the process is unclear.
