December 2025

Dr. Navid Goudarzi, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MCE), is part of a team that received funding from the Ohio Federal Research Network (OFRN) to develop next-generation ultra-high temperature coatings for reusable hypersonic vehicles. The project is led by AsterTech LLC with Cleveland State University and the Ohio State University serving as academic partners.

Dr. Goudarzi will develop computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to analyze temperature gradients and heat transfer behavior in coated substrates subjected to extreme thermal cycling. The models will inform experimental trials and guide optimization of layer thickness, material selection, and thermal cycle durability.

OFRN supports collaborations of industry and research institutions to advance the research priorities of Ohio-based federal and state agencies including the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton (NAMRU-D), National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC), NASA Glenn Research Center (NASA-GRC), and the Ohio National Guard.

NIH Requirements for Biosketches and Research Security Training

The NIH will require the use of the Common Forms for Biographical Sketch, Current and Pending (Other) Support and NIH Biographical Sketch Supplement prepared using SciENcv for application due dates and all JIT, RPPR, and Prior Approval submissions on or after January 25, 2026. See notice found here.

NIH and NSF have issued new requirements regarding research security training and disclosure of all current and pending research activities and affiliations. Under these new directives, all senior personnel (not just PI/Co-PIs) listed on a federal award are required to comply with the training and disclosure requirements. CSU has added the module Research Security Training (Combined) to our CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) training subscription to meet these requirements.

UPDATE: Canadian Patent Issuance

The Canadian Patent Office has allowed Application No. 3,043,708  titled Chip-Platforms for Micro-Array 3D Bioprinting that names Dr. Moo-Yeal Lee, a former assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (ChBME).

The inventive method utilizes proprietary 384 micro-pillar and well plate combinations for the creation of 3D printed miniature live human tissues. The miniature human tissues allow for the high throughput screening of drug candidates.  A miniature 3D human liver organ in each well plate can be tested in hours against 384 different formulations.
