August 2025

Dr. Kevin Mueller and Dr. John Van Stan, both members of the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences (BGES), have been awarded $672,505 over three years for their project, “Modeling the mysterious flow of rainwater and nutrients through urban tree canopies: a laser-focused integration of hydrology and ecology.”

The funded research will focus on ~30 tree species located in an arboretum near Cleveland, Ohio. The research team will use terrestrial laser scanning and other methods to measure varied characteristics of canopy form, like leaf waxiness, leaf and branch angles, bark roughness, and the surface area of leaves and branches, with an aim to help cities improve the selection of tree species to reduce stormwater runoff and other challenges related to rainwater management.

Shaowei Yang Receives NSF Engineering Research Initiation Award

Dr. Shaowei Yang, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (BME), has been awarded a two-year, nearly $200,000 Engineering Research Initiation (ERI) award from the National Science Foundation for his project titled “ERI: Engineering Amino Acid-Anchored 2D Silicoaluminophosphates and Aluminosilicates for Advanced Adsorption and Biomedical Applications.”

Dr. Yang will attach a variety of amino acid structures to 2D materials and modify those amino acids to perform functions like adsorbing rare earth elements to separate them from brine solutions and serving as a scaffold for cell growth.

History Professor Mark Souther Publishes New Book and Helps Rename Local School

History Professor Dr. Mark Souther’s research and scholarship continues to impact Northeast Ohio and beyond. In June, Dr. Souther assisted the Cleveland Heights–University Heights (CH-UH) City School District in their process to rename Monticello Middle School. His research helped resurface the story of Dr. Luther O. Baumgardner, a Black physician whose family endured intimidation, including a bombing attack on their home. His daughters both attended Monticello and graduated from Heights High. The CH-UH School Board voted in July to change the middle school’s name to Baumgardner.

Dr. Souther’s newest book, Sandhill Cities, is out from Louisiana State University Press on August 5. The book tells the story of how three cities in Georgia (Augusta, Columbus, and Macon) sought metropolitan stature in the twentieth century. The book was researched and written with support from CSU’s Faculty Scholarship Initiative (FSI) internal funding program.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Workshop led by Dr. Shawn Ryan Begins Sept. 5

The Office of Research will sponsor a Workshop Series on the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) hosted by Dr. Shawn Ryan, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and a past NSF GRFP reviewer. The GRFP program is open to science, engineering, and education majors. The program is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. Graduate student applicants must be in the first or second year of their graduate program as of Fall 2025. Undergraduate students are eligible if they intend to enroll in their graduate program by Fall 2026. Students must register by September 1.

Reminder: Introduction to Quantum Computing August 25-September 26

Discover the principles of quantum computing in this introductory course. You will distinguish bits from qubits, master single- and two-qubit gate operations to construct basic circuits and analyze state transformations through superposition and entanglement. You will explore quantum algorithms, Deutsch and Grover, and assess their advantages over classical counterparts. You will examine noise challenges and simple error correction techniques. Finally, you will evaluate quantum computing's impact on cryptography and investigate quantum teleportation. Enroll now to build a rigorous foundation in quantum information science.

Cleveland State University staff and full-time faculty may register using the professional development benefit.

UPDATE: NSF I-Corps Application Submission

When: Application Deadline September 7, 2025, Start Date October 3rd, Online Attendance

I-Corps supports teams of students or a faculty member and at least one student through a 7-week critical market and commercialization evaluation. Benefits of I-Corps include:

  • Increasing the impact of your research by understanding industry needs, so you can compellingly communicate the value of your research
  • Learning NSF tech commercialization approaches that will improve your ability to pursue grants like NSF's $50,000 I-Corps Teams, $300,000+ Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) or $275,000 STTR grants; I-Corps graduates have a greater than 37% success rate on these grants
  • Receiving $1,000 in NSF-lineage funding just for participating

Apply now to participate in I-Corps this fall. To apply or to learn more, visit I-Corps UARF or email UAicorps@gmail.com.

TeCK Fund Phase 4 Accepting Letters of Intent

The TeCK Fund, a technology commercialization and startup fund, managed by Cleveland State University Research Corporation continues to accept Letters of Intent for the opportunity to submit a full proposal.

A successful full proposal will require the approval of the Selection Committee at which the PI will have to present. The TeCK Fund Round 4 provides faculty pursuing applied research projects with funding to assist with commercialization activities, including prototype creation, third-party validation, and market research, which are required to successfully spin off technologies.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in an I-Corps program prior to applying.
