Congratulations to Dr. Julie Wolin, an associate professor in the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BGES), on her selection for The Champion of the River AOC (Area of Concern) award for 2026. The award is given annually to organizations and individuals whose actions improve and protect water quality in the Cuyahoga River through advocacy, policy and education.

Dr. Wolin created numerous Environmental Science courses related to aquatic resources and sustainability and has actively performed field research on the Cuyahoga River and other sites during her career at CSU. A Featured Research video highlighting some of her field work can be viewed here.

NIH R15 Workshop March 18

The Office of Research will host a workshop for faculty to learn more about the NIH’s Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) R15 award program, which supports meritorious research that engages student researchers.

Workshop Details

• The workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 18 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.

• The workshop will be led by R15 awardees from CSU.

• The final day to register is March 17.

Applied BME Doctoral Student Tenesha Connor Receives Top Abstract Award

Tenesha Connor, a doctoral student in the Applied Biomedical Engineering program, delivered a podium presentation on her abstract titled “Dynamic Circuit Remodeling During Glioblastoma Progression: Depth-Resolved Electrophysiology and Cortical Imaging Define Network Biomarkers”, at the 2026 MD Anderson International Cancer Neuroscience Symposium, that took place on February 18–20, 2026 in Houston, Texas.

Tenesha’s presentation, who conducts her doctoral research with Dr. Murat Yildrim at the Cleveland Clinic, was judged the "Top Abstract."

UPDATE: US Patent Issuance

On February 24, 2026, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued U.S. Patent No. 12,558,244 titled Adjustability Mechanism For Lower Limb Orthosis that names Dr. Jerzy Sawicki, the Bently and Muszynska Endowed Chair, Professor, and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering (MCE), along with former CSU affiliates Jason Wiebrecht, Curt Laubscher, Anthony Goo, Ryan Farris, Steven Etheridge.

The invention is directed to an actuating assembly for a powered lower limb orthosis that is configured to rehabilitate or assist a person who is walking impaired. A lower limb orthosis is a device used to help assist, rehabilitate, and/or improve disorders of a person's lower limbs (e.g., a person's hip or knee).

 

CSU team Flexel Devices Engages in I-Corps

A team from CSU is participating in the current NSF I-Corps Cohort conducted by the University of Akron Research Foundation. The CSU team, named FlexelDevices, includes Metin Uz, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (CBE), and PhD candidates Andrea Zuccaro (Entrepreneurial Lead), Ekin Gun Simsar, Naomi Addai Asante, and John Scheatzle (Mentor).

The team is validating the value proposition of their project titled Polymer Casting and Water Immersion-based Flexible Electronics Fabrication Method through a seven week customer discovery process. The technology is protected by CSU Patent Application No. 63/874,763.
