The Office of Research is excited to announce the latest portfolio of internal research projects that have been funded across the University.

52 Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) proposals and 20 Graduate Student Research Award (GSRA) proposals were funded, representing five academic colleges. USRA students will receive personalized research mentoring from faculty and will present their research results at a poster session this fall. GSRA awards support thesis and dissertation research in diverse fields of study, including life sciences, clinical psychology, environmental science, and autonomous vehicles.

10 Faculty Scholarship Initiative (FSI) proposals representing four academic colleges were selected for award. The FSI Program funds faculty conducting quality research, or other creative or scholarly activity, that advances the respective field or discipline. Five Faculty Research Development (FRD) projects were funded with the expectation that they will lead to future externally funded research programs.

CSU Doctoral Student Awarded Fulbright Scholarship for Research in Ireland

Doctoral candidate Katherine Antall, a student in the counseling psychology specialization at Cleveland State University and sexual health specialist in the Behavioral Health Department at the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, is spending the semester in Ireland as a Fulbright Scholar. While there, Ms. Antall is collaborating with colleagues at Trinity College Dublin to examine mental health services in Ireland for people with neurodevelopmental disabilities who have experienced sexual exploitation.

CSU Business Professor Helps Validate New HIV Target

Dr. Pedro Gerum, an assistant professor of Data Analytics in the Department of Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSM), worked with a team from Emory University to validate a newly discovered mechanism in HIV treatment. The research was published in Nature Immunology.

Dr. Gerum performed independent statistical analysis that validated the Emory research team’s new target and direction for HIV treatments, showcasing the critical role that data analytics plays in life-saving medical research.

UPDATE: US Patent Issuance

On February 3, 2026, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued U.S. Patent No. 12,543,045 titled Biometric Activity Based Pairing Protocols For Wearable Devices that names Ye Zhu, a professor in the Department of Computer Science, along with former CSU doctoral student Jafar Pourbemany, Ph.D.

The invention teaches a method of pairing two user worn devices including collecting first and second biometric activity from respective first and second user worn devices to create two separate biometric signals, processing the two biometric signals to create first and second keys and determining if the keys match to allow for secure pairing of the two user worn devices. The first and second biometric activity may be the same or different biometric activities. The processing of the biometric signals is adjusted based upon the types of biometric activities being sensed.
