Cleveland State was awarded a $250,000 grant to acquire a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) instrument that will support ongoing NIH-funded research at CSU and help increase research capacity. The grant is led by Dr. Yana Sandlers, an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, and includes faculty members Dr. Xue-Long Sun, Dr. Aimin Zhou, and Dr. Bin Su as major users of the system.

The LC-MS/MS system's advanced technical capabilities will promote rigorous and reproducible research, upholding high standards for scientific methodology and data reliability, while providing essential hands-on training for CSU's undergraduate and graduate students.

NIH’s S10 Instrumentation Grant Programs support purchases of state-of-the-art commercially available instruments to enhance research of NIH-funded investigators. To be eligible for an S10 award, an institution must identify three or more principal investigators with active NIH research awards who demonstrate a substantial need for the requested instrument.

Nithya Gnanapragasam Will Present Keynote at Gordon Research Seminar

Dr. Nithya Gnanapragasam, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BGES) and member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD), has been invited to serve as a keynote speaker at the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on Red Cells, held in conjunction with the Gordon Research Conference on Red Cells, taking place June 12-13, 2027 in Newport, Rhode Island. The seminar’s focus is “Emerging Perspectives in Red Cell Biology: From Fundamental Mechanisms to Novel Technologies,” and will highlight advances in erythropoiesis (generation of red blood cells) and red cell research.

UPDATE: Patent Application Filing

U.S. Patent Application Ser. No. 64/010,412 was filed and titled: Systems and Methods for Imputing Tissue Phenotypes from RNA Sequencing Data naming Dr. Peng Jiang, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences (BGES) and a member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD).

Histology (human tissue analysis) is labor-intensive, costly, and often infeasible for frozen or archived biobank specimens. The invention uses artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to transform RNA-seq data into quantitative, histology-comparable tissue phenotypes, thereby reducing the cost and time required for analysis.
