Dr. Fasong Yuan, a professor in the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BGES), has received new funding to perform fieldwork studying causes of hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in Lake Erie’s central basin. Dr. Yuan will work with co-investigator Dr. Zihan Lin, an assistant professor in the BGES department, as well as graduate and undergraduate student researchers.

The two-year project, titled “Investigating Vertical Hypoxia Dynamics in Lake Erie’s Central Basin Using a Top-Down and Bottom-Up Approach,” is funded by Ohio Sea Grant.

METAL Program – New Metalworking Training at CSU

Cleveland State University has entered into a new partnership with  IACMI – The Composites Institute® to offer the Metallurgical Engineering Trades Apprenticeship & Learning (METAL) program to enhance and scale up industry-driven training opportunities for current and prospective metalworking and manufacturing professionals.

Led by Dr. Tushar Borkar, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MCE), the training will consist of hands-on, in-person bootcamps with an emphasis on forging. Additionally, CSU will collaborate with local high schools, community colleges and other universities to integrate METAL training into their educational curricula, enriching opportunities for students interested in metalworking and manufacturing.

Save the Date: USRA Poster Session is September 17

Join Cleveland State University undergraduate student researchers as they present findings from projects funded by the Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) Program. Research supported by the USRA program, as well as the McNair Scholars Program, will be showcased at the 2026 USRA Poster Session, held Thursday, Sept. 17, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Student Center Atrium.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Workshop with Dr. Shawn Ryan Begins September 8

The Office of Research will sponsor a Workshop Series on the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) hosted by Dr. Shawn Ryan, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and a past NSF GRFP reviewer.

The GRFP program is open to science, engineering, and education majors and is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. Graduate student applicants must be in the first or second year of their graduate program as of Fall 2026. Undergraduate students are eligible if they intend to enroll in their graduate program by Fall 2027. Students must register by September 6.

NIH Seeks Input for Measuring and Rewarding Scientific Impact

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking feedback from stakeholders to assist in defining specific, measurable indicators and incentives that reflect the collaborative, rigorous, and mission-driven nature of modern biomedical science.

NIH is particularly interested in comments that include specific examples of measurable indicators, implementation approaches, potential benefits or unintended consequences, and considerations for feasibility across career stages, disciplines, and institution types.

Comments must be received no later than August 19, 2026, and must be submitted through the online comment portal found here.

I-Corps supports teams of students or a faculty member and at least one student through a 6-meeting critical market and commercialization evaluation. Benefits of I-Corps include:

• Gain market insight to inform the next steps in your R&D.

• Develop network connections and receive mentoring from experienced industry experts and entrepreneurs.

• Conduct at least 21 interviews with potential customers and users.

• Become eligible for the NSF I-Corps National Teams program and $50,000 grant. (Eligibility requirements apply).
