Meet CSU's New Research Faculty
Dr. Adam Voight joined the College of Education and Human Services this past fall as an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Foundations. Dr. Voight's research is concerned with improving education and wellness for young people who are marginalized due to poverty, racial minority status, and other social forces. As part of this work, Dr. Voight examines how the social environment of urban schools is related to student learning and how a positive school environment may offset socioeconomic and racial gaps in certain educational outcomes. His research has shown that in schools reported by students to be safer and more supportive, students have higher levels of achievement and there are smaller gaps in achievement between student subgroups. Dr. Voight also uses research to assess strategies for improving school environments. In another, related line of research, Dr. Voight examines the civic engagement of marginalized young people. Specifically, he explores the personal and community benefits of having an awareness of social problems in one's community and being involved in actions to improve one's community. He has found that young people who are more engaged in this way have higher levels of academic achievement and school attendance and are disciplined less frequently at school. In addition, urban schools that have more engaged students enjoy more positive relationships among and between students and teachers and experience fewer incidents of bullying and violence. Dr. Voight collaborates with young people, school and district staff, youth-serving nonprofit organizations, and policymakers in conducting his research. His work has led to an increased emphasis on the school social environment in certain state and district policies. He has also worked with a number of youth groups, engaging them in research to examine social issues and helping them use the results of their research as the basis for civic action.
Browne Lewis, Leon and Gloria Plevin Professor of Law and the Director of the Center for Health Law and Policy, was just awarded a core Fulbright grant for the United Kingdom for spring 2016. Professor Lewis plans to spend the semester at King's College in London researching legal issues related to physician-assisted suicide. This achievement is especially impressive given that Fulbright grants for the UK are particularly competitive. Having Professor Lewis selected for this grant is a huge honor - both for her personally, as well as for CSU. CSU's growth in research and development expenditures as reported by the National Science Foundation has received national attention. A recent article in The Chronicle of Higher Education reported: "At least one midsized institution has found a way. Cleveland State University, shown by the NSF data to have had the largest research-spending growth among any major research university over the past decade, put a priority on developing local expertise, says a spokesman, Kevin Ziegler. That growth includes federal grants to teach science to Cleveland-area grade-school and college students; a partnership with the Cleveland-based engineering giant Parker Hannifin that led to expanded research involving human motion, including prosthetic limbs; and increased biomedical partnerships with the Cleveland Clinic," Mr. Ziegler says. "CSU's steady growth in research expenditures can be attributed to the efforts of our faculty and students, and reflects the University's growing commitment to research and scholarship. Strong productivity has also allowed CSU to increase our share of competitive dollars while the trend in research expenditures across the nation is flat," said Vice President for Research at CSU, Dr. Jerzy Sawicki.

Dr. Sreedhar Madhavaram's research is the focus of the latest installment of the Featured Researcher Video series. Dr. Madhavaram is an Associate Professor of Marketing at Cleveland State University. His research focuses on marketing strategy, theory and development, and innovation. Undergraduate Summer Research Award Recipients The Office of Research is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2015 Undergraduate Summer Research Award program. Fifty-eight proposals were received from six colleges with requests totaling $450,397. Thirty-six proposals were funded across six colleges for a total of $249,980. New Assistant Director of SPRS
Please join us in welcoming Lisa Franklin to the role of Assistant Director in the office is Sponsored Programs and Research Services, effective April 13, 2015. Lisa brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in pre-award administration to the position. She has extensive experience in proposal submission in both federal and non-federal awards. She has worked at the Cleveland Clinic and most recently George Washington University. Lisa is looking forward to serving faculty. We are very pleased to have been able to hire someone with her impressive credentials.
News from the Technology Transfer Office
_____________________________________________________________________________ Call for Applications to Exhibit at the 2015 Innovation Festival. The Smithsonian Institution and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) are collaborating to engage the public, scholars, thought leaders, inventors, and innovators in a dialogue about the critical role invention and innovation play in our society. The signature event of the collaboration is the Innovation Festival--an annual celebration of invention, creativity, imagination, and innovation on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This year's event, which will take place September 26-27, 2015, will explore how today's inventors are creating the world of our future. Applications to exhibit at the 2015 festival are now being accepted. The deadline is March 31, 2015. See this page for more information.
Space is Limited - Spring 2015 Workshop Space is limited and time is running out to register for workshop, Logistics of Proposal Development, presented by the Office of Research. The workshop is open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty interested in developing proposals for external research funding. This workshop is being offered on Friday, April 10 from 1:00-4:00pm in PH 104. Call for Participants - Summer 2015 The Office of Research is pleased to announce a workshop for tenure-track faculty serious about obtaining external research funding, particularly from federal agencies. The workshop will be conducted over a seven-week period during Summer 2015 (beginning the first week in June). The workshop will include one meeting (approximately two hours) each week, which will include a mix of invited presentations, group discussions, and constructive feedback for the participants. The idea is that by the end of the workshop, each participant should have a complete proposal ready for submission to a funding agency. New Funding Opportunity - MIRP Up to $75,000 for Successful Multidisciplinary Teams of Eligible Faculty
The Office of Research is pleased to announce the Multi-College Interdisciplinary Research Program (MIRP), which provides funding for broad and collaborative research activities that are interdisciplinary and involve faculty from multiple colleges across CSU. A comprehensive list of guidelines for MIRP are available here. Each application must designate a team that includes one Principal Investigator (PI) and at least two co-Principal Investigators. At least three colleges must be represented between the members of the proposing team and the involvement of each member including the PI and Co-PIs should be specifically described. Applicants should contact Dr. Conor McLennan in the Office of Research at c.mclennan@csuohio.edu or via phone 216-687-5171, prior to submitting a proposal, to receive confirmation that the proposed research is consistent with the goals of the program. There is no specific due date for proposals. Instead, proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis, and the Office of Research will coordinate the continuous review of all submitted proposals until September 30, 2015, or upon commitment of all available funds, whichever occurs first.
The Office of Research is pleased to announce that researchers whose work includes human participants now have the option of submitting new protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) using Cayuse IRB. Cayuse IRB is a completely online system, including online protocol creation, submission, review, and management. Cayuse IRB is easy to use and should improve all aspects of the submission and review process for researchers and IRB members.
Researchers will enter their 7-digit CSU ID number and password to access Cayuse IRB. Click here for a Researcher Introduction on Using Cayuse IRB at CSU. Although Cayuse IRB is currently optional, researchers are encouraged to start using Cayuse IRB now - both because we expect that researchers will prefer doing so, and because we expect to eliminate the traditional offline application option by the end of the summer. Finally, researchers will have the option of importing previously approved protocols into Cayuse IRB in the near future.
Web of Science-Google Scholar Collaboration As many researchers know, the Web of Science is based on published, peer-reviewed content, and Google Scholar incorporates a larger set of citations, including from preprints and theses. Thomson Reuters Web of Science and Google Scholar began a collaboration, which was rolled out approximately one year ago. Researchers are encouraged to read more here, and to consider watching this webinar from March 4, 2015 that informs researchers how to get the most out of this collaboration. _____________________________________________________________________________
