Jason Halloran Awarded Industry Research 
Dr. Jason Halloran,  an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and a co-director of the Center for Human Machine Systems (CHMS), has been  awarded a research grant by Stryker, a Fortune  500 medical technology company. The one-year award for $60,192 will fund the  development of proof-of-concept computational models of knee joints. 
Dr. Halloran’s  research focuses on computational biomechanics with applications in orthopedics-related  device analysis, multiscale simulation of human tissue, and cellular  deformation. He has collaborated with surgeons at St. Vincent Charity Medical  Center’s Spine  & Orthopedic Institute to improve rehabilitation techniques and  create new prosthetic technologies. Dr. Halloran also serves as the faculty  liaison to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), which is responsible  for ensuring compliance with all federal and state regulations regarding human  subjects.

 Meet CSU's New Faculty 
Clayton Wukich, Urban Studies 
Dr. Clayton Wukich is an associate professor and director of the Master of Public Administration (MPA)  program in the Levin College of Urban Affairs. He joined CSU  in 2017 after earning his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh and teaching at  Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas for five years. His research  interests include digital government and social networks. 
One of Dr. Wukich’s  current projects examines social media’s role in empowering communication  during Hurricane Florence between cities and residents across three states.  Another project, facilitated by CSU’s Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA)  Program, explores the formation of information networks between U.S. city  mayors, and the extent to which those interactions influence policymaking and  administrative decisions. 
Dr. Wukich has  published in several journals including Government  Information Quarterly and the Journal of  Contingencies and Crisis Management. He recently joined the  editorial board at the Journal of Public  Affairs Education.

 Featured Researcher Video Series 
Patricia Stoddard Dare,  
  Social Work 
		  
The development and  launch of drughelp.care,  an online service and mobile app developed by Dr. Miyuki Tedor (CAS)  and Dr. Patty Stoddard Dare (Social Work),  with support from Dr. Wenbing Zhao (EECS), is the  subject of this month’s featured video. 
The new service for  matching drug addiction treatment services to clients in need, which is being  piloted in Cuyahoga County, will reduce the time spent searching for  appropriate facilities with available treatment spaces and improve the likelihood  that a client can connect to treatment resources.

 International Research 
Research Partnership with Slovenia 
            John  Plecnik, an associate  professor in the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, was awarded a bilateral  grant from the Public Research Agency of the Republic of Slovenia in  partnership with the Graduate School of Government and  European Studies in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The grant will support  an international faculty and research exchange between Cleveland State  University and the Graduate School to discuss “the rule of law in the  constitutional systems of Slovenia and the United States of America.” 
            Prof. Plecnik’s  research focuses on the intersection of taxation and public policy, and his  work on constitutional law has been cited  by the Supreme Court of the United States. He and his Slovenian  colleagues will visit each other’s schools over the next two years and offer a  series of presentations and guest lectures on their latest research.

 CSU Scholar News 
Lili Dong, EECS 
Dr. Lili Dong is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and  Computer Science (EECS). Dr.  Dong’s research focuses on control systems and applications,  micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), regulation of power systems, electric  power assist steering systems (EPAS), path following of marine surface vessels,  and 3D electronic printing. 
Dr. Dong and her  research group established a 3D electronic printing lab at CSU in 2015 and are  actively collaborating with local companies and academic institutions on  circuit board printing. This lab makes CSU the first and only academic  institute in Ohio that owns and operates electronic additive manufacturing  systems. The lab allows CSU students to produce electronic prototype circuits  with fine feature detail on non-flat substrates. 
Dr. Dong has  published more than 40 research papers since 2005, and has advised 20 doctoral,  master’s, and honors students in the past 13 years. She is the chair of IEEE Control  Systems Society, Cleveland Chapter, an associate editor of ISA  Transactions, and a society review chair for American Control Conference.

 Inspired Creativity 
Brian Bailey Conducts the CSU Chorale and University Chorus Dec. 1 
Dr. Brian Bailey,  an associate college lecturer and Director of Choirs in the Department of Music,  will conduct the CSU Chorale and University Chorus in December as  they present Songs of the Season. Dr. Bailey, who joined CSU in 2009, also sings in the  Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and is on the roster of the Cleveland Chamber Choir. 
The University Chorus  will perform music of Mendelssohn, Manz, Joan Szymko, and Elaine  Hagenberg, with student conductor Frederick Assmus conducting  Mendelssohn's Behold a Star. The CSU Chorale will perform music of Debussy, Howells, Abbie Betinis,  and Will Todd. The combined choirs will also sing the conclusion of Ralph  Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace). 
The concert will be held Saturday, December 1,  2018 at 4:00 pm in  Waetjen Auditorium in the CSU Music and Communication Building, and admission  is free and open to the public.

 Human Motion Tracking 
U.S. provisional  patent application no. 62/741979 was filed October 5, 2018 for Dr. Wenbing Zhao, a professor in the  Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).  His invention, titled Methods for  Privacy-Aware Motion Tracking with Notification Feedback, enables  discriminative tracking of a worker’s activities and encourages them to be  compliant with best practices in order to improve the worker’s well-being and  reduce claim submissions to the Bureau of Worker’s Compensation.  | 
 MicroRNA (MiRNA)  for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Purposes 
An invention  disclosure was received from Dr. Girish Shukla,  a professor in the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental  Sciences (BGES)  and a member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD),  disclosing the therapeutic effects of his MiRNA technology on prostate cancer  cells. Dr. Shukla has developed a  gene therapy treatment which targets  several different pathways and significantly reduces the growth of prostate  cancer cells in mice. According to the American Cancer Society, one in seven men  will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The  global prostate cancer therapeutics market is expected to reach $12.0  billion by 2025, according to a report by Grand View Research, Inc.

IoT Pilot Grants, Health Sciences RAPIDS Grant, and NIH Award 
The IoT Collaborative  (IOTC)  and the Office of Research are pleased to announce the selection of five IoT  Collaborative Pilot Grants for 2018. Over $90,000 in funding, provided by the  Cleveland Foundation, Cleveland State University, and Case Western Reserve  University, has been awarded to these projects, which each include at least one  PI from each university. The winning projects are:

State of Ohio RAPIDS Funding for Health Sciences 
The College of Sciences  and Health Professions (COSHP) has been awarded  $238,441 from the State of Ohio to purchase equipment that will be used for  courses in the School of Health  Sciences and for workforce training activities. The Regionally  Aligned Priorities in Delivering Skills (RAPIDS)  award is one of the State’s strategic investments in cooperative education and  internship programs. 
NIH R01 Sub-Award for Sandra Hurtado Rua 
Dr. Sandra Hurtado Rua,  an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics,  was awarded $119,875 over five years as part of a National Institutes of Health  (NIH) R01 grant  with Dr. Susan Gauthier of Weill Cornell Medicine.  Dr. Rua will provide statistical data analysis of multimodal neuroimaging data  and other clinical variables.
