Research Funding

Dr. Thijs Heus, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics, has been awarded $216,875 over three years via the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program. Dr. Heus will partner with Dr. David Turner from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) and Dr. Tim Wagner from the University of Wisconsin’s Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC). Their project is titled “Characterizing Land-Atmosphere Interactions Using ARM SGP Observations.”

Dr. Heus studies cloud formation and atmospheric flow by developing high-resolution computer models known as large eddy simulations (LES). For this project, he will run highly detailed numerical model simulations of the weather over the Southern Great Plains measurement site and, by comparing the simulated data with observed data, will develop improvements for weather and climate research models.

Meet CSU's New Faculty

Hiram López, Mathematics and Statistics

Dr. Hiram López joined CSU as an assistant professor in the department of Mathematics and Statistics in January 2019. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV-IPN) in Mexico City. During his Ph.D. studies, he received a Swiss Excellence Scholarship Award at the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, and he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Clemson University from 2016 to 2018.

Dr. López’s research focuses on two main areas: mathematics and computer science. In mathematics, he studies coding theory from an algebraic point of view as well as network coding. For coding theory, he uses mainly commutative algebra tools. In network coding, he uses results of combinatorics, optimization, graph theory and algebraic geometry, and in computer science, he is interested in the theory and the applications of pattern recognition of images. Food Safety Research

Research to reduce contamination by pathogens such as E. coliSalmonella, and Listeria during food processing is the subject of this month’s featured research video. The multidisciplinary team includes Dr. Chandra Kothapalli from the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and Drs. Daniel Munther and Parthasarathy Srinivasan from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The team’s goal is to provide the food industry with better data on how wash systems can be improved to reduce cross contamination and make cleaning systems more effective without increasing chemical use.

CSU Research Expenditures Maintain Record Level

Research expenditures at CSU remained level at $84 million in 2018, tying the largest annual total in our history, as reported in the recently released NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey.

The high caliber of research performed at Cleveland State occurs because of our outstanding faculty, who are dedicated to teaching, research, and service to the University. This is reflected in CSU ranking #166 nationally in total R&D expenditures, and remaining #5 among Ohio institutions. In terms of federal expenditures, CSU's $55 million ranked #145 nationally and also #5 in Ohio.

CSU Scholar News

Gwendolyn Majette, Law

Gwendolyn Roberts Majette is an associate professor in the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and a member of the Center for Health Law and Policy (CHLP). Professor Majette’s scholarship focuses on patient rights, delivery system reform, health disparities, global health, and health care reform. Her scholarship has real-world impact, having been used by the United States Commission for Civil Rights, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the World Health Organization, and leading health law texts.

She recently published “Controlling Health Care Costs under the ACA – Chaos, Uncertainty and Transition with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation and the Independent Payment Advisory Board”in the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethic. This interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal has the second highest impact factor in the world for health law journals.

Prof. Majette’s forthcoming work includes a chapter in Feminist Judgments: Rewritten Health Law Opinions, to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2020. The chapter considers Linton v. Commissioner of Health and Environment, a class action lawsuit brought by two elderly women against the Tennessee Commissioner of Health alleging violation of the Medicaid Act and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Her opinion considers the intersectionality of race, gender, class and age on a patient’s admission to nursing homes. It also evaluates the state’s regulatory policies from an economic justice perspective.
