Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University have received a $3.1 million, two-year grant from the Cleveland Foundation to further advance the Internet of Things Collaborative (IOTC).
The IOTC’s continued activities at CSU will be led by Dr. Nigamanth Sridhar, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and co-academic director of IOTC, and Shilpa Kedar, executive director of Digital and IoT Innovations at Cleveland State, and co-executive director of IOTC.
The funding supports completing the establishment of two technology research hubs and expanding faculty engagement across the two universities. A Community+Technology hub will drive approaches to technology development and deployment that prioritize public interest while keeping humanity at the center of technological advancement. An Industry+Technology hub focuses on future manufacturing and connected health, both of which are aligned with the Cleveland Innovation Project, a collaborative initiative of business and civic leaders designed to bolster Greater Cleveland’s innovation economy.
The recently established CSU T.E.C.H. Hub will be a focal point of the Community+Technology activities and public interest technology more generally. Dr. Nick Zingale (Urban Affairs), Dr. Patty Stoddard Dare (Social Work), and Dr. Sathish Kumar (EECS) are serving as faculty co-directors of the T.E.C.H. Hub.

EPA P3 National Student Design Competition Announced
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the release of the 18th Annual People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) National Student Design Competition. This collegiate design competition promotes the use of scientific and engineering principles to create innovative projects to address environmental challenges and develop real-world solutions. EPA is seeking applications in the research areas of Air Quality, Safe and Sustainable Water Resources, Sustainable and Healthy Communities, and Chemical Safety.
The two-phase competition will provide initial funding for research and development of design projects during the academic year, followed by an opportunity for teams to compete for funds to implement their projects in a real-world setting.
EPA will host an informational webinar on December 2 at 2:00 pm.

 CSU Scholar News
Meshack Owino, History
Dr. Meshack Owino is an associate professor in the Department of History. He earned his B.Ed. and M.A at Kenyatta University, Kenya, and M.A. and Ph.D. at Rice University. Dr. Owino joined CSU in 2005, and he teaches courses on pre-colonial and modern African history. His primary research focuses on the participation and experience of African soldiers in World War II, and war in Africa and the world in general.
The rise of digital social media has also attracted Dr. Owino’s attention, and he has conducted research and published articles focusing on the intersections between the digital media, the humanities, and public history in Africa. He and Dr. Mark Souther have been awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for research on digital humanities and public history in Africa. Their latest article in this area appears online as well as in the journal Africa in History. Dr. Owino’s research on the experience of African soldiers in wars has recently been published in the Palgrave Handbook of African Colonial and Postcolonial History. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of African Military History, and was featured in a CLASS “The Story of Us” video.

 Inspired Creativity
Anne Berry: Ongoing Matter
The work of Anne H. Berry, an assistant professor of graphic design in the Department of Art and Design, is featured in the travelling exhibition Ongoing Matter, currently hosted by The Galleries at CSU.
The exhibit explores the text of the Report on the Investigation Into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election, more commonly known as the Mueller Report, through design. Prof. Berry was struck by the density and inaccessibility of the report’s text, which led her to the idea to create works that emphasize important sections of the text and provide contemporary context. She co-created the exhibit, which can be viewed at The Galleries at CSU through December 12, with Sarah Edmands Martin, an assistant professor of graphic design at Indiana University.
The Galleries at CSU are located at 1307 Euclid Avenue, in the historic Cowell and Hubbard building, at the corner of East 13th Street.

 Commercialization Update
The TeCK Fund Selection Committee Meeting selected a new CSU proposal for commercialization funding. Dr. Antonie van den Bogert, the Parker Hannifin Endowed Chair and a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, leads the project, titled Reticulated Motion Capture Pitcher’s Sleeve. The novel motion capture wearable device will axially and radially capture the motion dynamics of a thrower’s arm movement. The wearable sleeve will improve the pitching mechanics of baseball players and in turn prevent injuries.
The CSU TTO continues to assist past TeCK Fund recipients with their validation and commercialization efforts. Contact Jack Kraszewski for assistance with a disclosure to begin the process of protecting your invention or intellectual property. |
 Funding Support Training
NorthCoast I-Corps training is available to help you attract additional sources of funding support for your research, technology, or new ideas. The program is short, part-time, and devoted to helping participants obtain funding and other support for the development of an idea, technology, or research outcome.
Four CSU research teams are currently participating in the October cohort. The next cohort starts December 4. Contact Jack Kraszewksi (j.kraszewski@csuohio.edu), CSU's Director of Technology Transfer, for additional information. |
