Dr. Moo-Yeal Lee, an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (CBE), will lead research to better utilize pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from patients to create miniature human tissues (a.k.a., organoids).

The two-year, $210,000 award is part of an NIH SBIR Phase II grant that was awarded to CSU start-up company Bioprinting Laboratories, Inc., titled “Pillar and perfusion well plate platforms for reproducible organoid culture from iPSC.” Dr. Lee will lead the development of reproducible differentiation and maturation methods of human organoids for disease modeling and high-throughput, predictive screening of compounds.

The award builds on miniature organ re-creation via 3D bio-printing developed by Dr. Lee. CSU has licensed the IP portfolio to Bioprinting Laboratories and has assisted previously with an award from the TeCK Fund for the support of their TVSF Phase II award.

Meet CSU's New Faculty

David Hicks, Art and Design

David Hicks is an assistant professor of drawing in the Department of Art and Design. He received his M.F.A. from Indiana University Bloomington. His research is exclusively focused on drawing the human figure. Highly influenced by the old masters, David takes a very classical approach to drawing the human figure and portrait. Yet, the themes in Hicks' work range from introspective narratives to resurrecting the monomyth of the hero's journey in contemporary experience.

David exhibits his “mural scale” multi-figure drawings nationally, internationally, and regionally. Recently, two of Hicks' drawings were accepted into Marshall University's 10th Annual Juried Exhibition in West Virginia. One of the two drawings has been chosen as the winner of the exhibition. Other recent exhibitions include shows in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, North Carolina, and India. Forthcoming, David will be exhibiting another one of his drawings in a group exhibition at Limner Gallery (Hudson, NY) and he will be having a solo show at BayArts in 2022.

Center for Behavioral Health Sciences

The Center for Behavioral Health Sciences (CBHS) is a multidisciplinary center focused on high quality and interdisciplinary research that addresses issues related to substance abuse, social determinants of health, prevention and well-being, and behavioral health policy and administration.

Established in 2017, CBHS is led by director Cathleen Lewandowski, a professor and Director of the School of Social Work. The Center brings together interdisciplinary scholars at CSU who are focused on intervention studies in partnership with and support from local, state and federal agencies.

Inspired Creativity

Cheryl Bracken's Binge Watching

Dr. Cheryl Bracken, Interim Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and a professor in the School of Communication recently published a new book titled Binge Watching with co-author Bridget Rubenking.

Binge Watching reviews historically significant advancements in the television industry and in technology that better enable binge watching, such as timeshifting, increasing quantity and (sometimes) quality of content, as well as distribution strategies and suggestions algorithms employed by OTT providers. The authors situate binge watching as human-centered, that is, driven by innate human needs and wants, such as a desire to consume well-constructed stories and to connect with others. They also review the current state of academic binge watching research – from motives and habituation to the (over-pathologizing) addiction-based studies.

News from the Technology Transfer Office

Invention Disclosure Pipeline Update: U.S. Patent Allowance

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has allowed the U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 15/404,291, titled “3D-Printed Miniature Biological Constructs,” that names Dr. Moo-Yeal Lee, an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (CBE). The invention creates 3D human cells/tissues within an integrated plate system to mimic in vivo drug responses with physiologically relevant organ-organ interactions which act as “human surrogates” and provide more accurate prediction of drug effects in humans. The patented technology has received a TeCK Fund Award, Ohio Third Frontier TVSF Phase 2 Funding and a SBIR Phase 2 Award.

Contact Jack Kraszewski for assistance with a disclosure to begin the process of protecting your invention or intellectual property.

Reminder: I-Corps@Ohio Info Sessions

Are you considering an application to compete for the $12,500 grant and participating in the 2021 I-Corps@Ohio cohort? Maybe you are just curious what I-Corps@Ohio is all about.

You have until February 1, 2021 at 11:59 PM to submit your application for funding provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) to be selected to participate in the 2021 cohort.

The final information session will be held January 20, 2021 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.

The RFP can be viewed here, and Jack Kraszewski, Director of the Technology Transfer Office, can assist with forming an I-Corps team.

Research and Scholarship News from Across Campus

CSU Faculty Recognized for Publication Impact

Authors John Ioannidis, Kevin Boyack, and Jeroen Bass recently published an update to their science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators. The publicly available database of 100,000 top scientists provides standardized information on citations, h-index, coauthorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator.

Numerous Cleveland State University faculty were included in the top 2% of researchers having the highest single-year (2019) impact of their publications. The active CSU faculty included:

Injazz Chen (OSM)
Zhiqiang Gao (EECS)
Dan Simon (EECS)
Antonie van den Bogert (Mechanical Engineering)
Anton Komar (BGES, GRHD)
Roman Kondratov (BGES, GRHD)
Richard Perloff (Communications)
Wenbing Zhao (EECS)
Sanjay Putrevu (Marketing)
Hanz Richter (Mechanical Engineering)
Orhan Talu (Chemical and Biomedical Engineering)

Additionally, Dr. Kenneth Kahn, Dean of the Monte Ahuja College of Business, and several emeritus/emerita faculty were included. Congratulations to all!

Cleveland State Awarded Two APLU Aspire Grants

CSU has been awarded two ASPIRE catalytic grants by the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU). The grants are designed to help participating institutions advance effective practices that address institutional barriers to a more diverse STEM faculty.

CSU will lead a research study on the use of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements in faculty hiring. DEI statements are widely used in higher education, but little research exists on their efficacy or how to maximize their impact in boosting diversity and inclusion.

Additionally, CSU is part of a team of universities working to provide improved mentoring experiences for faculty from underrepresented groups. The project will create a regional network providing culturally responsive training to mentors who help develop STEM faculty from underrepresented groups.
