Research Funding News

Dr. Eric Schearer, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded a three year, $450,000 renewal by the National Science Foundation for RE@CSU, a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site at CSU. Dr. Schearer is joined by a group of faculty mentors whose research spans engineering, physical therapy, and exercise physiology to create an immersive program to train undergraduates recruited from around the country in the development of assistive technologies.

RE@CSU researchers will leverage sensing and computing to develop devices and therapy techniques to restore mobility and functional independence to people with reduced movement of their arms or legs. The 10-week program, held during the summer, will welcome student researchers to CSU’s campus to join integrated learning communities that surround REU students with their peers, their mentors, medical professionals, and people with disabilities.

Meet CSU's Faculty

Kailash Gulshan, BGES

Dr. Kailash Gulshan is an assistant professor in the Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science (BGES) and a member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD). His research is focused on the role of inflammation in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and lung cancer. His postdoctoral research at the University of Iowa encompassed a wide variety of research projects including studies on reactive oxygen species, multidrug resistance, and the process of effluxing (flowing out) drugs from cells. He joined CSU in August 2020 from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute (LRI).

Dr. Gulshan joins with a new, four year, $1,607,512 NIH R01 award and a Case Comprehensive Cancer Center pilot award of $50,000. In addition to CVD, his lab is also interested in studying the role of inflammation in lung cancer. His interest in the role of inflammation/cytokine pathways in lung cancer was deepened by the recent COVID-19 pandemic that highlighted the role of immune system-mediated “cytokine storms” in increasing fatality rates in COVID-19 patients.

CSU Green Lab Program

The CSU Green Lab program has just launched! Developed by undergraduate student Grace Weyman Heller, a Biology major who is also pursuing minors in Chemistry and Environmental Science, the Office of Sustainability, and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, this initiative aims to conserve energy and water, and to reduce waste in CSU labs. The components of the program include:

CSU Green Lab websiteAn overview of the program with links to CSU materials and resources.

Green Lab GuideBest practice guidelines for energy and water conservation, sustainable purchasing, and waste reduction.

Shut the Sash campaignFume hoods are one of the largest energy users on campus. New stickers remind users to always shut the sash for safety and energy conservation.

Green Lab Training: This module will be included with EHS Lab Safety Training in Blackboard.

Faculty are encouraged to share these resources with students and staff who work in labs. For questions or more information, email Jenn McMillin, Director of Sustainability, at j.mcmillin@csuohio.edu.
