Tushar Borkar Receives DoD Research Award for Steel Coatings
Dr. Tushar Borkar, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has received $699,397 in funding from Advanced Technology International (ATI) to evaluate coatings on forged steel parts. The three-year project is titled “Evaluation of Oxidation-Resistant Coatings on Forging Billets.” The research is sponsored by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) based in Ft. Belvoir, VA and by DLA Troop Support in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Borkar will lead the technical development and will evaluate commercially available coatings for their ability to prevent the oxidation and decarburization that occurs during pre-heating of forging billets. Automated and robotic application methods will be explored to improve quality, reduce cost, improve cycle times, and to provide additional safety.

 Federal Research News
Updates to NIH Forms
NIH has updated its application forms and instructions to support the need for applicants and recipients to provide full transparency and disclosure of all research activities, foreign and domestic.
A new notice published by NIH highlights changes to biosketches and other support. Of note, “Other Support” includes all resources made available to a researcher in support of and/or related to all of their research endeavors, regardless of whether or not they have monetary value and regardless of whether they are based at the institution the researcher identifies for the current grant.
Changes are effective May 25, 2021.

 Inspired Creativity
Caryl Pagel's Out of Nowhere Into Nothing
A new book by Caryl Pagel, an associate professor in the Department of English and Director of the Cleveland State University Poetry Center, has been released by the University of Alabama Press. Out of Nowhere Into Nothing is a collection of sublime meditations on the unbelievable, the coincidental, and the apparitional; the ghosts–literal and figurative–that drive our deepest impulses, disturb our most precious memories, and haunt the passages of our daily lives. The essays blend memoir, research, and reflection, and are driven by a desire to observe connections between the visual and the invisible.
Out of Nowhere Into Nothing can be found on locally at Mac’s Backs in Cleveland Heights and online at the University of Alabama Press website.

 New Invention Disclosure
The CSU Patent Review Committee unanimously approved the invention disclosure of Dr. Prabaha Sikder, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MCE), titled “A Multifunctional Peek Interbody Cage.” The novel interbody cage is a medical implant composed of poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) and a proprietary bio-ceramic compound. When combined and processed, extruded filaments are 3D printed to produce biocompatible spinal cages to allow for improved healing of spinal fusion surgeries. The novel cages can be printed to the specific scans of the patient and applied to numerous bone treatment procedures and implant components.

 New U.S. Patent Allowance
The United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent for U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 15/943,847, titled “Shoulder-Surfing Resistant Authentication Methods and Systems” that names Dr. Ye Zhu, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).
A mobile device user is susceptible to shoulder-surfing attacks in which an unauthorized individual strategically positions their field of view, often over the shoulder of the user, to see the screen of the mobile device as the password is being entered. The invention provides a novel program to protect a user of a mobile device when logging in.
